Workshops

1. Assessing Your Outdoor Environment To Support Curriculum Planning

by Ann Gula

Do you spend as much time planning your outdoor environment as you do arranging your indoor environment? Is your outdoor space neglected? Have you run out of ideas for creating a stimulating outdoor environment?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, this workshop is for you. Participants will conduct assessment of their outdoor environment for both safety and curriculum opportunities using an assessment based upon the POEMS (Preschool Outdoor Environment Measurement Scale) and then strategize to create a more exciting environment that stimulates learning year round.

This workshop will also focus on small or non-existent environments, providing strategies to create outdoor opportunities in these spaces, as well as assessment of spaces for infant/toddlers and school-age children.

2. Using Books, Stories, & Other Literacy Tools To Support Social/Emotional Development

by Ann Gula

Do you need some ideas for going beyond the usual questions at story time? Are you tired of “I wonder what will happen next?”

In this workshop, participants will review social/emotional development milestones before creating strategies for using books, stories, and other literacy tools for supporting healthy social/emotional development.

Participants will use book guides, known as book nooks, to embed social/emotional skill building activities into their everyday routines.

Through the use of literacy strategies, participants will learn how to focus instruction with books to promote following expectations, feeling vocabulary, and using friendship skills.
