Some residents are seeing large white moths laying buff colored egg masses on trees on their property. This is a result of a recent build-up in the gypsy moth numbers in pockets of York County.

Gypsy moths go through a cycle in which they are present in low numbers for 5-10 years. The numbers then begin to increase dramatically over a season or two, leading to an outbreak that can last 3-5 years.

If your home is in a forested area and you are seeing gypsy moth activity, you may wish to request assessment. Property owners in affected areas can enroll by filling out the online form on the York County Penn State Extension website or call to request inclusion in the program. Surveying of egg mass numbers to determine program eligibility will be carried out in August and September.

Please note: The deadline for requests to the Gypsy Moth Coordinator for inclusion in the survey process is July 31, 2015. Application does not guarantee that the property will be treated.
