County Facts

York County is located in South Central Pennsylvania, and is one of seven counties in the Capital Region. The county seat is York city, the White Rose city, and the first site of the Continental Congress. York county was founded August 19, 1749 and is a Third Class County. York County is centrally located between Lancaster, Adams Cumberland and Dauphin counties. Our central primary roadways are I 83 (north and south) and Rt. 30 (east and west). The turnpike passes through the northern tip of our county and Rt. 15 travels north and south along the western edge of the county. According to the 1997 US Census of Agriculture there are 2,240 farms in York county averaging125 acres per farm, and a total of 280,500 acres in farmland. As of December1996 York county ranked 2nd in Pennsylvania and 10th in the United States in the number of farm land acres preserved.
