"Whose Shoes"

Posted: April 21, 2011

On Saturday March 12th, Better Kid Care, in collaboration with The Peoples Library in New Kensington, offered a professional development session for 21 early care and education practitioners.

The event asked participants to examine the dimensions of the families, communities and cultures of all children.  Focusing on the new Pa One Book “Whose Shoes? A Shoe for Every Job” by Stephen R. Swinburne, participants chose a real shoe that evoked special thoughts or memories for them personally and shared them with the group.
Using those stories as a starting point, participants engaged in discussions, activities and developed lessons around the book and created action plans to implement them in their daily programming.  Copies were made of the lessons and distributed to participants so all could benefit from the exchange of information.
The session ended as the book does, asking participants to consider all the dynamics and future possibilities for children and families they work with on a daily basis and asking the question, “Whose shoes will you wear some day?”  Early care and education has the potential to support endless possibilities when time is taken to get to know, understand and build relationships with all people.
