Beginning Vegetable Gardening Course

Posted: January 4, 2012

Did you know that the average vegetable garden produces over $400 worth of fresh, healthy vegetables in one season? With a little education, knowledge, and guidance, you will be growing your own vegetables this summer. Don’t be afraid! You can do it!

The Penn State Master Gardeners will hold a four week course on February 7, 14, 21 and 28 at the Wayne County Park Street Complex in Honesdale. During the course experienced Master Gardeners will walk you through the gardening process step by step – from selecting seeds and planting through harvest. The proposed course schedule is as follows:

WEEK 1: Feb. 7 – Garden location & preparation. What to grow and how much. Reading seed catalogs.

WEEK 2: Feb. 14 - Starting seeds for your garden. Transplanting. Seed exchange.  (You are welcome to bring in seed to share)

WEEK 3: Feb. 21 – Planning the growing season. Diseases and bugs. Annuals and perennials.

WEEK 4: Feb. 28 – Harvest tips. Season extension. Garden clean up. Preparing for next year.

The Master Gardeners will give away door prizes during each class. Classes will run from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM each evening. The cost to participate in the course is $20.00 which includes all four nights. Registration for an individual night is $7.00. Children under 18 are free. You may pre-register by calling the Penn State Extension Office in Wayne County at 570-253-5970 x 4110 or by email to WayneExt@psu.edu. Seating is limited so register early.
