Who should attend

  • New and beginning farmers who would like to learn about growing potatoes. Some basic farming knowledge is helpful, but not required.

What to expect

  • The classroom section will feature a broad overview about potato production in this region. Instructor has a lifetime of potato growing experience in Pennsylvania, plus international potato production experience.
  • Students will spend three hours in class to learn the fundamentals of potato production.
  • Students will get hands-on experience in the two field sessions which will be held on potato farms

  • How to select a good site for growing potatoes.
  • How to select the right potato varieties for your market.
  • How to care for potato seed.
  • How to cut seed.
  • How to improve soil for potato production.
  • How to properly fertilize potatoes.
  • What kind of equipment is needed to grow potatoes.
  • How to plant potatoes.
  • How to manage weeds in potatoes.
  • How to manage insect and disease pests.
  • When potatoes need irrigation.
  • How to harvest potatoes.
  • How to store and have high-quality potatoes for months.
