Jacob Hall at the National Shooting Competition 2011
June came around and before I knew it I had to have my bow packed and my clothes ready to go. In the morning my coach and I were flying down to San Antonio for an event that I have been shooting for months for. It was the 4-H Shooting Sport Nationals. And I was on my way!
We flew down on Sunday and arrived in San Antonio at 4:00. As we stepped out to get our rental car for the week, I noticed that the temperature was at record high that day but cooled off to 113 degrees by the time we got there. I knew that it was going to be a rough week putting my skills to the test in this heat. I was right; we shot a practice round Monday in the heat and my 5 rounds felt like 50. I kept my focus and shot the courses well. My favorite competition was the 3-D round. It was a test to everyone’s ability, and once again the heat came into play this time. I couldn’t get over how nice the range was and how the targets were in such good shape. Everything was the best.
Even though I didn’t place throughout the week, I had a great time. It was an experience that I will never forget. I also was privileged enough to meet some great shooters that had compassion for the sport as well. Everyone was so happy to shoot everyday, which made it even all the more fun. I would love to go again and shoot. If anyone asked me if they should go down I would tell them to do it if they want to shoot at an elite level, and gain an experience that only comes once in a life.
