Plum Pox Virus

Plum pox disease of stone fruits is caused by a virus new to North America. However, plum pox virus (PPV) is not a strange new virus. It is related to several viruses, such as, potato virus Y and maize dwarf mosaic virus that commonly occurring in Pennsylvania crops . All of these viruses share similar characteristics, but differ in the crops infected and types of diseases they cause. Plum pox virus has been a well known pathogen of stone fruits for over 60 years in Europe where it is considered to be one of the most important diseases limiting production.
