Both Field Days are a joint effort between the Pennsylvania Vegetable Growers Association and Penn State Extension and Penn State researchers. Registration is through the Pennsylvania Vegetable Growers Association.

July 12th Vegetable and Fruit Field Day

The July 12, 2017 Vegetable and Fruit Field Day at Rock Springs is shaping up to be a jam-packed event. Taking place at Penn State’s Russell E. Larson Agricultural Research Center, growers will have the opportunity to see and hear about research being conducted by members of the Plant Science, Plant Pathology, and Entomology Departments on vegetable and fruit crops.

Registration and refreshments will be available starting at 8:00am at the Horticulture Research Farm, located just east of the Ag Progress Days site and 11 miles west of State College on Route 45 at Gate H. The street address is 2240 West Pine Grove Road, Pennsylvania Furnace, PA 16865.

At 9:00 there will be a drone demonstration, followed by tours of vegetable and small fruit research plots. Plots visited and projects discussed will include ones on weed management in processing tomatoes and sweet corn, Allium leafminer monitoring, cantaloupe and pepper establishment, hops establishment, tomato breeding, product efficacy trials for vegetable disease management, sweet potato size management and butternut squash storage, low tunnel strawberry production, high tunnel strawberry and raspberry production, pumpkin variety evaluation and wine grape research trials.

Following lunch, the afternoon will feature breakout sessions where growers can choose among visiting tree fruit research trials on apple rootstocks, apple training systems, biorenovation of orchard sites, and orchard weed control among others; attending a hands-on vegetable pest disease and disease identification workshop; or visiting the High Tunnel Facility to learn about the latest research in plastic coverings, high tunnel venting and design options, and containerized berry production. A sprayer calibration demo will be the final event of the day where growers will have the opportunity to earn a core pesticide recertification credit. The program will conclude at 4:00pm.

The registration fee for the Field Day is $20 for adults ($10 for children 3 to 10, children under 3 are free) if registered by July 10. After July 10, the late registration fee will be $30 for adults ($15 for children). Registration includes lunch, drinks and snacks.
