Pest Watch August 21, 2015

Posted: August 21, 2015

In summary, Corn Earworm (CEW) captures are spotty but above threshold in Bucks Lancaster Lycoming and Schuylkill Counties. Lancaster County has dramatically high populations. Fall Armyworm (FAW) populations are also being captured throughout the state, with notable captures in Blair, Centre, Clinton, Erie, Fayette, and Lycoming Counties. European corn borer (ECB) populations appear to be insignificant.

Corn earworm (CEW)

Although many sites are still low, trap counts are above threshold in Bucks Lancaster Lycoming and Schuylkill Counties, and spikes are dramatic in Lancaster County. We are probably seeing increases from both immigration and a locally produced second generation.

Fall armyworms (FAW)

Counts are being reported in most sites, with notable captures in Blair, Centre, Clinton, Erie, Fayette, and Lycoming Counties. We often hear of problems with FAW causing crop damage before we get decent trap captures, and this has occurred this year as well.

Values in tables estimate catch-per-night for the week ending in the indicated date. Multiply by 7 to estimate catch-per-week.

Thresholds

Spray timing can be adjusted according to moth flight. Shorten schedules when populations increase. Begin at row tassel for ECB and FAW. Thresholds were developed for CEW on older large-stemmed full-season cultivars (e.g. ‘Silver Queen’) that can withstand more damage, and later adapted to include ECB measured with blacklight (as opposed to pheromone) traps. PestWatch shows the data as an average "catch per night" to represent the information from different areas that report on different time intervals.

Thresholds Based on CEW Captures

Levels CEW catch / night Spray frequency
almost absent < 2 4 days to no spray
very low 3 to 5 5 to 6 day
low 6 to 10 4 to 5 day
moderate 11 to 50 3 to 4 day
high > 50 2 to 3 day

If CEW is low, then consider ECB

Levels ECB catch / night Spray frequency
almost absent < 2 no treatment
very low 3 to 5 6 day
low 6 to 10 5 day
moderate > 10 4 day
high
