Hard Cider Production Survey for Fruit Growers

The Penn State Extension Tree Fruit team has put together an online survey for fruit growers that currently grow or are interested in growing apples for hard cider.

Whether you are selling the fruit or juice to cidermakers, or are fermenting the cider yourself, we are interested in hearing from you! The results of this survey will be used to guide future extension projects and field trials in the area of cider orchard management.

While cider fruit may not need to be held to the same cosmetic standard as fruit for the fresh market, quality fruit is still needed to ensure high quality in the final product. This survey is designed to help the team determine the most challenging production issues for hard cider fruit growers. The survey includes questions about your current orchard production systems, and which practices you have adapted or would consider adapting in the next five to ten years if more information was available. Some topics covered in the survey include: cultivar and rootstock selection, integrated pest management practices, soil fertility management, and orchard floor management. The survey consists of multiple choice and open ended questions.

The survey will be available to growers until the end of July, and should take no more than fifteen minutes to complete.

The survey is available online, or can be mailed as a paper copy.
