Spring Orchard Meeting

Penn State Extension has planned ten educational meetings for commercial tree fruit growers and orchard employees this spring.

The meetings are being held in orchards across the state. Growers have an opportunity to visit other commercial tree fruit operations, learn from Extension specialists who are experts in their program areas, and discuss current tree fruit issues with other growers at a critical time of the growing season.

Integrated Pest Management Options for Pest and Beneficial Insects

Greg Krawczyk, Extension Tree Fruit Entomologist

Updates on new tools and techniques to monitor and manage insect pests while protecting beneficial organisms in fruit orchards.

Managing Tree Fruit Diseases in 2017

Kari Peter, Extension Tree Fruit Pathologist

Timely disease management tips will be discussed for early season issues, as well as what growers should keep in mind for potential issues that may be encountered during the summer. In addition, a handout including an updated Fungicide Resistance Management Table for key diseases will be available.

Apple Thinning and Promoting Return Bloom

Rob Crassweller, Professor of Tree Fruit and Extension Pomologist

The effect of blossom density, and weather during the current growing season on apple fruit set will be summarized, with the objective of helping growers make decisions for apple crop load management and return bloom.
