Who are Penn State Master Gardeners?

The Penn State Master Gardener volunteer program supports the outreach mission of Penn State Extension by utilizing unbiased research-based information to educate the public and our communities on best practices in sustainable horticulture and environmental stewardship. After completing training, Master Gardeners help Extension serve the gardening public by answering questions, speaking to groups, writing gardening articles, working with youth, gardening in the demonstration gardens, participating in a range of citizen science research programs, and in many other ways.

How do I become a Penn State Master Gardener?

To become a certified Master Gardener trainees are required to participate in a minimum of forty hours of basic training, score 80% on the final exam, and fulfill 50 hours of volunteer service. Classes include: botany, plant propagation, soil health and management, composting, controlling pests safely, entomology, plant diseases, indoor plants, vegetables, lawn care, pruning, woody ornamentals, herbaceous plants, native plants, weeds and invasives.

What is Required of a Penn State Master Gardener?

Extension Master Gardener volunteers maintain their status by volunteering at least 20 hours and attending 10 hours of continuing education annually.

Our next Philadelphia MG Class begins August 24th and runs Thursday evenings 6-9pm through mid-December at the Penn State Center, 675 Sansom Street. Registration is open until June 15th.  THIS CLASS IS FULL.   We will likely have the next training class starting in summer/fall 2018.    Check back in January 2018 for more info about that.

What is the Cost? At Penn State Extension Philadelphia we strive to include anyone who is interested and willing to commit to the requirements of the program. The cost of the 15 week basic training is on a sliding scale.
