The collection of perennial plants that come up every year are many and varied. Some examples include: Scarlet Bee Balm, Butterfly Weed, Purple Coneflower, Yarrow, Joe- Pye Weed, Garden Phlox, Violets, Black-Eyed Susan, Shasta Daisy, Sedum and Coreopsis. Many provide nectar for the adult butterflies, and some provide food for the caterpillars.
Each year annuals are added to provide additional nourishment for the butterflies. The selection of annuals are varied according to availability. Profusion Zinnias, Pentas, Mexican Sunflowers, Marigolds, Verbena, Lantana, Wave Petunia, Dianthus, Red Salvia, Sweet Alyssum, Cosmos, and Nicotiana are examples of the annuals used in past years. Butterflies also enjoy the herbs located in the Herb Garden which is next "door". Other herbs such as parsley, fennel and dill are replaced yearly in the Butterfly Garden for the caterpillars.
Some varieties of butterflies that have been observed in our garden are Black Swallowtails, Tiger Swallowtails, Monarchs, Viceroys and Skippers. Butterflies also enjoy sunning themselves on the flat paver stones located throughout the garden. As a water source, a small dish containing rainwater and gravel sets in among the plants. A puddling area with soil, manure, gravel, and flat stones is also provided.
To keep the butterflies safe from harmful chemicals, Master Gardeners use very little, if any, pesticides on the garden.
Come and visit the Butterfly Garden and use the pavers to get close to the butterflies and other pollinators as well as to the plants. Please sit on our bench and enjoy the garden.
