Posted: February 1, 2017

Dave Wilson joined the Field and Forage Crops Team in the beginning of January as an Extension educator in Berks County.

Dave Wilson has over 20 years of experience as a research agronomist in field crops, forages, grazing, and farming rotations. He has been actively involved with developing new field crops programs and working as an Ag-Educator in Soil Health, Cover Crops, Forage Crop, Grazing Systems, and Crop Rotation. He holds a B.S. degree in Agronomy & Environmental Science from the Delaware Valley College of Science & Agriculture.

Dave’s background includes dairy farming, maize-breeding, certified hybrid corn production, certified soybean and small grain production and agricultural crop protectant research. His prior experience includes working as a research agronomist for King’s Agriseeds Inc, conducting research evaluating new species and varieties for use in forage systems and as cover crops. Also, he has experience as a Research Agronomist at the Rodale Research Institute conducting research in organic systems and working with organic farmers. He is a member of the Pennsylvania Forage and Grassland Council, and interacts with Project Grass projects and the PA No-till Alliance. He is currently serving on the advisory board for an USDA-OREI (Organic Agriculture Research and Extension Initiative) project involving a multi-state initiative on improving weed and insect management in Organic Reduced-tillage Systems; as well as a new USDA project which will investigate how certain cover crops and rotations can improve production of organic commodities. He has collaborated with Penn State and Cornell University research personnel with the evaluation of the inter-row seeder project, looking at various species of cover crops inter-seeded in corn and soybean. As an agricultural educator, Dave gives presentations concerning soil fertility, soil health, cover crops, forage crops, grazing systems, weed management, compost utilization, pesticide presentations and crop rotation strategies for both conventional and organic farmers.

Dave is looking forward to working with producers in the Berks County and surrounding areas. He will be working out of the Penn State Extension Office at the Berks County Agricultural Center in Leesport, PA.
