Assessing Alfalfa Stands

Posted: March 31, 2015

Congratulations, you have survived another long winter. However, maybe your alfalfa wasn’t so lucky. Now is the time to do an assessment of the stand to determine if the field should be rotated to corn.

A quick and simple method to determine if the stand is worth keeping is to get out there and count the number of live alfalfa plants. If there are less than 4-5 alfalfa plants/square foot then the stand is generally not economical to keep. However, the health of the remaining alfalfa plants is important to consider. Here is a link to a seven minute YouTube video that shows how to conduct a complete assessment of alfalfa stands.
