Registration Open for Walking Program
Posted: February 27, 2012
DEW stands for ‘Drop Everything and Walk.’ Anyone can participate in this free walking program. All you need is a pair of walking shoes and a pedometer.
Here is how DEW works. A five member team includes one captain. Each team member reports their weekly miles to their captain, who in turn reports the team’s miles to the Extension office. Progress is plotted on a map and the race is on! The race is virtual but the fitness is real!
The goal of the program is simply to increase participants’ daily physical activity by providing a structured walking program. Teams can be made up of co-workers, family members, or friends – with all ages welcome.
DEW begins Sunday, April 8, and coincides with the American Heart Association’s Start Walking Day. For more information, contact Penn State Extension in Pike County, 514 Broad Street, Milford PA, 570 296-3400.
What You Need to Do To Get Started
-
Form a walking team of 5 members. Team members don't have to walk together, or even reside in the same town. Members will keep track of their individual miles and report them to the team captain. It's a great way to stay in touch with family and friends.
-
Choose a team captain and pick a name for your team (i.e.: Foot Loose or 5 Pacers).
-
If you are an individual without a team and would like to participate, call the Penn State Extension office at 570-296-3400 - we might be able to pair you with a group who needs an extra walker.
To access the necessary forms to participate in this program, visit:
- Individual Registration Form
- Team Registration Form (to be completed by each Team Captain only)
The registration deadline is April 2.
Access for the following resources can be found by going to the main page of our website and clicking on Registration Open for DEW under Upcoming Events on the right side of the page:
- An individual log to keep track of your own weekly miles
- Instructions for using an on-line pedometer site
- An Exercise Equivalent Chart (to calculate mileage for other activities, such as gardening, housework, or exercise, that can be included in the mileage count.)
Captains will report their weekly team members miles on-line. A link for an on-line weekly progress report will be sent to each captain.
