Demonstration Gardens in Fairmount Park
Welcome to the gardens
The Penn State Philadelphia Master Gardeners sponsor and maintain two demonstration gardens in Fairmount Park to teach children and adults about plants that impact our everyday lives. The Edible Landscape Garden was designed and built in 2004 to show various cultivation practices such as succession planting, integrated pest management and water conservation. The Pollinator or Butterfly Garden has been around just as long and is a spectacular example of native plantings to attract and support a wide variety of fauna. Trained by Penn State University Cooperative Extension, and Outreach, the Master Gardener volunteers share their love and knowledge of gardening with the community through a variety of projects.
This demonstration garden, managed by the Penn State Extension Philadelphia Master Gardeners, is a living classroom for community groups and visitors in the practices of intensive gardening.
The Butterfly Demonstration Garden was designed to educate the visitor about the life cycle of the butterfly and the environment they need to flourish.
