Grants Available for Oil and Gas Research to Increase Recovery Efficiencies and Prevent Offshore Spills

The U.S. Department of Energy is providing $20 million for cost-shared oil and gas research projects.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced oil and gas research funding to ensure environmentally sustainable domestic and global oil and natural gas supplies. 

The funded projects may fall under three topic areas:
•    Technology validation using field laboratories ($15 million)
•    Advancement in subsurface diagnostics ($3 million)
•    Offshore spill and leak prevention ($2 million)

The first 2 topics will focus on a better understanding of reservoir behavior and best completions, stimulation, and recovery strategies for unconventional oil and gas (UOG) to provide more cost-efficient, environmentally sound recovery from shale gas and tight oil and gas reservoirs.  The last topic area is geared to looking for innovative solutions to predict geologic hazards and to prepare and prevent offshore incidents through risk reduction and mitigation technologies.

The science required to provide a practical understanding of UOG reservoirs and their responses to stimulation is limited, thus resource recovery is not efficient.  Prudent development is required to optimize the balance between national energy security and economic benefits and minimize any negative environmental impacts.  The research provided through these federal grants will help to increase our understanding of UOG reservoirs and be more prudent in developing these resources.
