Mid-way through the summer many gardeners and farmers were seeing their celery curl and look misshapen. At first glance one would think the damage may have been caused by an herbicide. But this was occurring on farms and in gardens where no herbicide had been applied. And it seems to have been happening only with the variety "Tango".
At this point, Penn State pathologists believe it is caused by a fungus that is seed borne. Of those reporting the problem, the seed was purchased from more than one source.
Can it be eaten? Many folks ate it, others composted it. If you had this experience with your celery, you are encouraged to contact the company you purchased the seed from. Next year you may want to try a different variety.
