Mom’s Morning Out at the 4-H Fair: Freezing Summer’s Bounty
Posted: July 26, 2012
Have you planted a summer garden, found a favorite farmer’s market or know a local farmer that is selling fresh produce? If you have, you may have more than enough fresh fruits and vegetables for the summer. Fresh produce is wonderful and bountiful during these warm summer days, but what can you do to save some of this bounty to have during the cold winter months ahead?
Freezing summer produce is one way to extend the taste of summer beyond the growing and harvesting seasons. This year during the Montgomery County 4-H Fair, on August 11 at 10:30 AM to 11:15 AM, there will be a free 45 minute demonstration for moms and others who would like to learn how to freeze summer produce.
The demonstration will be conducted by Penn State Extension Master Food Preservers and will feature step-by-step instructions for freezing produce. Registration is not required. This demonstration is "family friendly" and all are welcome!
The Montgomery County 4-H Fair is held every year the 2nd week in August on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
The Fair dates for 2012 are August 9, 4:00PM to 9:00PM, August 10, 9:30AM to 9:00PM, and August 11, 9:30AM to 4:00PM.
The 4-H Fair is the culmination of the 4-H project year for Montgomery County 4-H members. This is their opportunity to show their families, friends and the public their achievements throughout the year. Our livestock and animal science 4-H members have their animals on display and proudly show them and answer questions. Other 4-H clubs also have their projects on display and are also on hand to promote 4-H and their clubs. A giant Fabric Sale is ongoing throughout the fair.
In addition to the 4-H projects, there are demonstrations, contests, games, music, an Open Baking Contest, an Open Pet Show and of course - all sorts of delicious food - including the World's Largest Sausage Patty!
Montgomery County residents are also encouraged to enter their projects into the Open Classes categories. This is a great opportunity to show off your talents! There are classes for all types of gardening, sewing, cooking, crafts, art, photography and more! The Open Classes are for all ages.
