May 1, 2015The 2014 season entomology update for the April issue of Fruit Times Newsletter started with a statement about the year having the coldest spring weather in the past 10 years. Extension Tree Fruit Entomologist Grzegorz Krawczyk points out this year, the forecasted accumulation of degree days base 43° F for April 28th 2015 is even lower than the corresponding number for 2014. As the colder weather influences the general development of insect pests, the low temperatures are influencing moth activities and pushing this year’s biofixes (first sustained flight of moths) to the latest dates on record.

Tractor safety program reaches milestone in Pennsylvania
April 29, 2015A program designed to reduce tractor-related farm injuries and deaths by helping farmers pay for the installation of rollover protective structures, or ROPS, recently reached a milestone in Pennsylvania. Administered by Penn State Extension, the ROPS Retrofit Program for Pennsylvania Farmers funded the installation of the 100th ROPS since the initiative began in 2011.
Bull named head of Plant Pathology and Environmental Microbiology at Penn State
April 24, 2015Carolee Bull will become head of the Department of Plant Pathology and Environmental Microbiology in Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences, effective Sept. 1. Bull currently is a research plant pathologist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service at its Crop Improvement and Protection Research Station in Salinas, California.
