The Vegetable and Herb Garden
The Vegetable and Herb Garden was started in 2005 and was the first garden at the Research Farm that demonstrated what residential consumers could do with their garden space. The garden is an example of a typical English cottage kitchen garden. The garden layout is square and is surrounded by a picket fence with a gate located in the center of each side. All the seeds and plants that are utilized in the garden are supplied by the Master Gardeners who maintain the garden and they all share the produce.
Each year the Master Gardeners create a themed garden in each of the four corners. For example, one year, the themes were a pie garden, a pizza garden, an unusual veggie garden and kid’s garden. There are vegetables grown in these gardens that you might not see anywhere else. How cool is that?
Herbs are planted in the four small areas in the center. These four herb beds are also themed as culinary, medicinal, tea, and aroma. There is a circle in the middle that, in some years, is planted to support pollinators to insure that the vegetables will be properly pollinated.
So, come out and see our garden and check out innovative trellises, birdhouses and birdbaths located in the garden as well as unique plant layouts.
