Get The Fact Sheet On Using Cover Crop Mixtures

Posted: July 22, 2015

A new fact sheet, titled “Making the Most of Mixtures: Considerations for Winter Cover Crops in Temperate Climates,” offers an overview of the basic concepts to consider when planning winter cover crop mixtures.

Weed suppression, nutrient management, beneficial insect support — these are just a few of any number of benefits that cover crops can provide. In some cases, combining cover crop species into mixtures, or "cocktails," allows growers to meet multiple management objectives and to maximize returns on their cover crop investment.
The fact sheet, published on eOrganic, provides guidance on choosing complementary species, establishing mixtures successfully, managing and terminating mixtures, and making observations and adjustments to improve the performance of cover crop mixtures over time. It was authored by members of the Penn State-led "Cover Crops Cocktails" project, a multidisciplinary team of researchers, educators, and farmers who have been evaluating cover crop mixtures in the northeastern United States. The fact sheet is available on the eOrganic website:
