Buying Pollinator Seed Mix
Any substitutions, however, should follow the NRCS guidelines on the colored sheet or be approved through NRCS with Jim Gillis whose contact information is listed below. Viability of the seed may also be an issue, with some companies certifying live seed and others that do not. To ensure the highest level of seed viability, most if not all companies do not “cold stratify” their seed, so they must go through a cold period to germinate. Most of our work has been with the Pennsylvania based company, Ernst Conservation Seed, to date. If you call them to place an order, refer to the “PA NRCS Pollinator Seed Mix” and they will know exactly what you mean and any substitutions they have made have already been approved through PA NRCS.
