1. Message from the Director and Associate Director: Progress on reframing

 

Summer is sizzling right along! I know my biscuits are burning (quoted from Yosemite Sam in the movie Roger Rabbit). Although it may seem we have been moving slowly in the process of Reframing Extension, consider that we only really started in October of 2007. In that context, we are moving at light speed. As with all forms of movement—with the possible exception of propulsion from cool fusion—friction is the enemy of acceleration and speed. No change of position can occur without a few differences of opinion and the expenditure of energy.

2. Save the date!

 

The Cooperative Extension Annual Conference will be held on October 28-30, 2008, at Seven Springs Mountain Resort , Seven Springs, PA. 3. Hyde appointed State Program Leader

 

Dr. Jeffrey Hyde, Associate Professor of Agricultural Economics, has been appointed State Program Leader for Entrepreneur and Value Added Agricultural Systems with Penn State Cooperative Extension, on a half-time basis, effective July 1, 2008.

4. Extension regional director selected County Commissioner's Fellow

 

G. Michael McDavid, Northeast Region unit leader for Penn State Cooperative Extension, has been selected by the County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania as the group's CCAP/Cooperative Extension Fellow for a one-year term that will run through June 2009.

5. The 4-H Keystone Society

 

The Pennsylvania 4-H Development Council has been busy increasing 4-H endowments. Their latest project, the 4-H Keystone Society, is an effort to provide tools for the fundraising volunteers at the state and county level to be successful in in-creasing 4-H endowments.

Congratulations to the 25th Anniversary of the Better Kid Care Program. Extension educators and the Better Kid Care staff celebrated the accomplishments of the program during their annual training conference. 11. Extension and sustainable water infrastructure: Advancing the dialogue in Pennsylvania

 

Earlier in 2008, Governor Rendell established the Sustainable Water Infrastructure Task Force and charged it to conduct a statewide analysis of the issues related to “cost-effective and sustainable investment in the state’s water and sewer infrastructure.” The Task Force is expected to deliver a report of its findings to the Governor by October 2008, which will include recommendations and financing options to support water-related services in the Governor’s fiscal year 2009-10 budget proposal.
