Herb Society Gardens of Historic Saltsburg

A.                Washington Street Steps Garden – Directions:  Entering Saltsburg on 286 South, turn left where 286 turns right toward the bridge.  You are in the Presbyterian Church parking lot at the bottom of Washington Street Steps. 

This garden was begun in 1996.  It consists of the Upper Herb/Perennial Bed (mostly Monarda, phlox, Shasta Daisy, and Stella de Oro Day Lily), the Narrow Steps Border (mostly thyme, dianthus, flowering bulbs, and annual flowers), and three small Half Circle Beds around light poles.

B.                Saltsburg Borough Office Building – Directions:  Emerging from Presbyterian Church parking lot, turn left on Salt Street 2 blocks to Point Street. (Shop ‘n Save store). Turn left 2 blocks up the hill to Borough Office and Garden.

This garden, begun in 1994, is the first Herb Society Garden.  It is a combination of herbs, perennials, and small shrubs in a raised bed around the flag pole.  Annual herbs and flowers are added each season.

C.   Street, past Post Office to Stone House Museum on right. (This is an 1830 Stone building with misshapen windows.) Find signs and entry to Museum Gardens at right of building. (Museum Gardens can also be accessed by continuing on Route 286 to Water Street (convenience store), turn left one block

D.  River Edge Gardens – Directions:  Continue to end of Point Street.  Find River Edge Flag Pole Garden on left as you cross Water Street, River Edge Rectangle Garden on right, and River Edge Road curving ahead with River Edge Wild Flower Garden on left.

a.               River Edge Flag Pole Garden – This garden was started in 1999.  Plantings include flowering bulbs, evergreen plants, and red/white/blue flowers for the main season. 

b.               River Edge Shade Garden – Begun in June, 1997 this is a mixed cosmetic bed that includes small shrubs, vines, perennials, some annuals, and herbs.

c.                River Edge Wildflower Gardens – Started in May, 1997, to accent and decorate the River Edge Boardwalk and Band Stand.  Plants include natives or ferals (escaped from settlers’ gardens) growing wild in the area.
