The Trouts have been volunteers with the Lucky Kids Goat Club for 11 years, providing the only county club that focuses solely on goat projects. Their focus is offering a strong educational program where members have hands-on experience in veterinary science, husbandry, and goat health and management. They have been instrumental in working with the addition of a 4-H market goat program to the Indiana County Fair, where they serve as superintendents with market and breeding goat programs. Dawn is currently serving as secretary of the Junior Livestock Sale Committee.

They also believe in sharing their animals with the public and are contributors to Family Fun Fest, local parades, and school promotions. Reference letters provided by club members and parents show that the Trouts are always willing to share knowledge and answer questions. Judging of the award was based on contributions to county, regional, and state programs; innovative educational programming, community service, and involvement in youth contests and shows.
