4-H Year Ends With "Pau Hana" Luau Achievement Celebration

Posted: December 3, 2015

"Pau Hana" is Hawaiian for "work is finished." On November 15, the Indiana County 4-H program honored its outstanding members for the 2015 year.

Achievement Celebration was very special for many members. We had a very good turnout with about 130 people in attendance! Thanks to all the leaders who nominated 4-H’ers, and congratulations to everyone who won an award. The list of award winners is at the end of this article.

Two of the three Ambassadors that served for 2015 will also be serving for 2016. They are Rachel Sproat, Trailblazers, and Teresa Shields, Gordon/Great Eggs-pectations. Thanks to them for agreeing to serve again this year. We also added a new ambassador for the upcoming year – Morgan Knox, Great Eggs-pectations/Northern Livestock/The Bunny Bunch/Lucky Kids. Welcome Morgan!

We did some other special recognition during the event. Jacqueline Little received a “Helping Hands” Award from the office for her special effort this year. Members who participated in any state level event were also asked to stand and be recognized. We also awarded Educational Incentives to six current and former 4-H members who are attending college. Congratulations to Mary Ann Ostach, Marshall Richardson, Jesse Isenberg, Sam McGaughran, Sarah McConnell and Ethan Trout.

Donors for the evening included Indiana Kiwanis, Horses & Hounds, Dairy Farmers of America, Robert Mikesell, Sr., Ted Kuckuck of Conemaugh Valley Ag Products, Windy View Farm (Ackerson family), Helen Mehus (in memory of Helen Bencic), the Bishop family in memory of Bob Bishop, and AgChoice Farm Credit.

April Flowers gave the invocation. Pledges were done by Reese Hays and Drew Rhea. Two of our members attending were recognized for participating in National 4-H Congress - Marshall Richardson and Mary Ann Ostach.

Janet Shilling assisted with registration. Thanks to Lori Richardson for all of her help with details for the event - decorations, ice cream, and other supplies. We certainly had a Hawaiian scene!!

Thanks to everyone else that helped with details of the evening - cleanup, registration, moving awards, kitchen help, etc., especially Dragon Powell and Rose Plavi, Mary Miller, McCoy family, Shilling family, Richardson family and Kitty and Don Eget.
