Indiana County No Longer Operating West Nile Virus Program

Posted: January 11, 2012

Due to state funding cuts, 2011 is the last year Indiana County will conduct a surveillance and control program for mosquitoes and the West Nile Virus. We have applied for and received grants annually since 2001 to reduce the threat to Indiana County residents from West Nile Virus.

Penn State Extension has served as coordinator of the program on behalf of The Indiana County Commissioners since the program began in 2001. Since 2001, there have been a total of 28 positive mosquito pools (21 sites), 8 positive dead birds, 0 positive humans and 0 positive veterinary samples documented in the county.

For 2012, The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection will be conducting mosquito surveillance and control activities in Indiana County from May until the beginning of October.  Any complaints or questions regarding the West Nile Virus Program or mosquitoes should be directed to Bryan Diehl, Water Pollution Biologist, DEP at 412-442-4140 or bdiehl@pa.gov.  You may also refer complaints to the department’s West Nile Virus website (www.westnile.state.pa.us).
