Why wait until February to file your return
You may be tempted to file an income tax return in early January, especially if you expect a refund. However, doing so puts you at risk of filing without a complete record of relevant tax documents and/or unmatched information that is reported to the government.
The W-2 is the only document used to transmit information about yearly earnings and taxes withheld. And, the W-2 information becomes the official record of your earnings with the Social Security Administration. Therefore, you want to wait be sure the information is complete and accurate before filing an income tax return.
If you still have not received needed tax documents by February 14, contact the IRS, 1-800-829-1040.
