Training Requirements

Training requirements for supervisory personnel are in place for food or feed businesses that are covered under the Produce Safety Rule, the Preventive Controls for Human Food Rule, and the Preventive Controls for Animal Feed.

Produce Safety Rule

112.22 (c) At least one supervisor or responsible party for your farm must have successfully completed food safety training at least equivalent to that received under standardized curriculum recognized as adequate by the Food and Drug Administration.

Preventive Controls Rule for Human Food

117.180(a)(1) One or more preventive controls qualified individuals must prepare or oversee the preparation of the food safety plan in addition to other activities.

117.4 (c) Preventive controls qualified individual means a qualified individual who has successfully completed training in the development and application of risk-based preventive controls at least equivalent to that received under a standardized curriculum recognized as adequate by FDA or is otherwise qualified through job experience to develop and apply a food safety system.

Preventive Controls Rule for Animal Feed

507.31(b) One or more preventive controls qualified individuals must prepare, or oversee the preparation of the food safety plan.

507.3 Preventive controls qualified individual means a qualified individual who has successfully completed training in the development and application of risk-based preventive controls at least equivalent to that received under a standardized curriculum recognized as adequate by FDA, or is otherwise qualified through job experience to develop and apply a food safety system.

Through the Northeast Regional Coordination Center (the Northeast Center for the Advancement of Food Safety), Penn State Extension is working with the official training organizations to help disseminate training. The framework for the development and dissemination of training can be found at FDA's website, for your information.
