The Sensory Evaluation Session portion of the Wine Quality Initiative program is a free service to all PA wineries. Your customers love the color perennial flowering plants add to their landscapes. Learning about herbaceous perennials will help you choose the right plants to thrive in the site, group them attractively, and provide four seasons of interest in your jobs. In this full-day class, Penn State horticulture professor Dr. David Sanford will cover popular perennials for landscape jobs. He will concentrate on rugged plants that are reliable performers, have few pest problems and are available in the trade. We will meet in the auditorium for the morning session to see pictures of the plants and discuss their habits and culture. Plan to spend approximately half of the class time outdoors looking at perennials in the demonstration beds surrounding the Berks County Agricultural Center. Come prepared for the weather. Add some new perennials to the palate that you offer your customers.

Learn how to blanch vegetables, to choose packaging materials, to individually quick freeze (tray freezing), to use a freezer thermometer, to vacuum seal, and much, much more. Learn options for freezing sweetened, artificially sweetened, and unsweetened fruits to produce a quality product that can be used by itself or used in desserts. Freezing fruit is an easy alternative to home canning and you don’t have to heat the kitchen.

The focus is on strength training, diet and exercise in a class setting. Individuals are educated on the effects of diet and exercise on bone health and bone mass to prevent the onset of osteoporosis.
This workshop will explore the theory behind sulfur dioxide and its relationship to pH, how to make proper SO2 additions in the winery and throughout production, how to properly manage oxygen, and how to effectively measure free and total SO2 in wine samples. While the use of sulfur dioxide in winemaking can be a challenging concept, this workshop will aim to make its use understandable in winemaking situations. Participants will have an opportunity to evaluate analytical methods related to SO2 measurements and discuss practical solutions to oxygen- and SO2-related winemaking problems. The cost for this workshop is $50 per person and includes both breakfast and lunch.

Dr. John Tooker will join the annual Agronomic Weed and Insect Tour and showcase some of his insect pest/slug and beneficial insect research at the farm. A number of weed control experiments will be showcased and available for viewing including the new soybean technologies from Dow (Enlist -2,4-D tolerance), Monsanto (Roundup Ready 2 Yield Xtend - dicamba tolerance) and Bayer Crop Science (HPPD – Balance tolerance). Pest Management CCA CEU's and Pesticide Recertification Credits will be available.

The annual Flower Trial Field Day is your opportunity to see firsthand over 1,100 of the newest annual flowers that will be offered to garden center and landscape clients next spring. Success in the landscape begins with a comprehensive knowledge of plant material available in the trade and matching site conditions with appropriate woody plants. Green industry professionals cannot give accurate estimates if they are unable to identify the plants in a landscape because they will not be aware of the maintenance requirements. In this six-week, hands-on class, Sandy Feather and Nancy Knauss, Penn State Extension Horticulture Educators, will teach participants to identify shade and flowering trees by their unique characteristics, while gaining an understanding of their growing requirements, as well as their common insect and disease problems. Continuing Education Units and Recertification Credits will be awarded. Dates - July 25, August 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29, 2013.
