The Pennsylvania Wine Marketing and Research Program (PWMRP) has been funding wine grape related research at Penn State for almost ten years. On May 22, 2013, a group of Penn State grape and wine faculty will present their current research funded by the PWMRP to the wine industry. We will also hear from Virginia Smith, 2012 Penn State Food Science graduate, on her experiences as an enology-focused student. Additionally, we have invited Dr. Justine Vanden Heuvel, Associate Professor at Cornell University, to be our guest speaker. All Pennsylvania wine industry members are invited to attend.

During this three-hour session, class participants will learn about the fundamentals of fuel supply and handling, available technologies for utilizing low, medium, and high grade Biogas streams, and the environmental benefits of processing otherwise unutilized or underutilized waste streams.

Kiln Drying for Hardwood Lumber is a basic course designed for kiln operator trainees, plant managers, and supervisors. No previous drying experience of training is necessary. Instruction will include lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on experience. Wood moisture relations, kiln operation, and drying schedule preparation will be emphasized in relation to drying of hardwood lumber.

Your customers love the color perennial flowering plants add to their landscapes. Learning about herbaceous perennials will help you choose the right plants to thrive in the site, group them attractively, and provide four seasons of interest in your jobs. In this full-day class, Penn State horticulture professor Dr. David Sanford will cover popular perennials for landscape jobs. He will concentrate on rugged plants that are reliable performers, have few pest problems and are available in the trade. We will meet in the auditorium for the morning session to see pictures of the plants and discuss their habits and culture. Plan to spend approximately half of the class time outdoors looking at perennials in the demonstration beds surrounding the Berks County Agricultural Center. Come prepared for the weather. Add some new perennials to the palate that you offer your customers.

This workshop will explore the theory behind sulfur dioxide and its relationship to pH, how to make proper SO2 additions in the winery and throughout production, how to properly manage oxygen, and how to effectively measure free and total SO2 in wine samples. While the use of sulfur dioxide in winemaking can be a challenging concept, this workshop will aim to make its use understandable in winemaking situations. Participants will have an opportunity to evaluate analytical methods related to SO2 measurements and discuss practical solutions to oxygen- and SO2-related winemaking problems. The cost for this workshop is $50 per person and includes both breakfast and lunch.

The Second Saturday Gardening Series is a series of gardening workshops presented by the Penn State Master Gardeners in Philadelphia County held on the second Saturday of each month through November. The workshops are presented to the general public and gardening enthusiasts on a variety of gardening topics. The topic for July 13, 2013 is "Do-It-Yourself Garden Ponds and Water Features." Sandy Grimwade, a Penn State Master Gardener in Philadelphia County and “keen ponder," will teach you how to plan and build a pond, stream or fountain for your garden with minimal expense and effort. Constructing a water feature will enhance your garden, whether large or small, and bring you years of enjoyment.
The purpose of this class is to prepare for the Pennsylvania certified pesticide applicator exams in Core and Categories 06 (Ornamental and Shade Tree), 07 (Lawn and Turf), and 23 (Parks and Schools Pest Control). Students should attend three or four days of training, depending on the license(s) they wish to obtain. Core training is held on July 16 and 18, and is required for all licenses. See the section on the Summary page of the registration website titled "What Days of Training Should I Attend?" to determine when you will need to attend class. Testing is conducted by the PA Department of Agriculture after completion of the class and requires additional fees. This is a hands-on, interactive session using live plant samples. Participants will be asked to go through the samples on their own, naming the plant and what is wrong with it. Success in the landscape begins with a comprehensive knowledge of plant material available in the trade and matching site conditions with appropriate woody plants. Green industry professionals cannot give accurate estimates if they are unable to identify the plants in a landscape because they will not be aware of the maintenance requirements. In this six-week, hands-on class, Sandy Feather and Nancy Knauss, Penn State Extension Horticulture Educators, will teach participants to identify shade and flowering trees by their unique characteristics, while gaining an understanding of their growing requirements, as well as their common insect and disease problems. Continuing Education Units and Recertification Credits will be awarded. Dates - July 25, August 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29, 2013.

A basic course in Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point certified by the International HACCP Alliance. Taught by certified instructors with extensive experience in food safety training, the course provides participants with hands-on experience in developing a HACCP plan. Terrariums, popular in the 70's, have rebounded in popularity. Lori Hayes, a Penn State Master Gardener in Philadelphia County, will show you how to design, make, and maintain these miniature gardens in a glass container. This is a hands-on workshop. Participants must provide a small glass container and plants will be available to purchase at the workshop. Space is limited to 20. Pre-registration is required.
