Growing Canola and Camelina
Canola is one of the most promising oil crops for biodiesel and feed production, and many farmers in the keystone state are interested in this opportunity. Penn State is actively involved in evaluating varieties and cultural practices for canola production in Pennsylvania.
Camelina is a close relative to Canola, and offers cold hardiness, drought tolerance, and an oil that is high in valuable omega-3 fatty acids. It has the potential to be a worthwhile component of a food-and-fuel production system for our region.
