Biography

As the director of Penn State Extension, Dennis Calvin is responsible for leading a dynamic team of administrators, educators, researchers, and sales, support, and service staff across Pennsylvania's 67 counties. He identifies opportunities and approaches for implementing strategic priorities as identified by college leadership, experts from Penn State and the academic community, and state and federal regulators.

Calvin is responsible for positioning the organization as a world leader in the practical application of cutting-edge research to Pennsylvania's food and fiber system, our economy, and the people we serve. Under his leadership, Penn State Extension has undertaken a major restructuring effort to align programs and products with stakeholder needs, deliver programming in ways that best meet customer preferences, and maximize statewide operational efficiency. This includes the reorganization of personnel and significant expansion of Penn State Extension's digital education capabilities.

Calvin has a strong background in extension and research with Penn State. He joined the faculty as an assistant professor of entomology in 1985. His academic research explores population dynamics, insect-plant interactions, and sampling technology related to insect pest management; modeling of biological systems; and the effects of climatic uncertainty on insect population dynamics and management.

From 1985 to 1996. Calvin also served as the university's integrated pest management coordinator. His extension work concerns pest management of field and forage crops and stored products, development of expert systems and decision support systems, and economic and social aspects of integrated pest management.

From 2009 to 2011, Calvin served as interim director of Penn State Extension before assuming the appointment full-time.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in agronomy and pest management from Iowa State University and master’s and doctoral degrees in entomology from Kansas State University.
