Feed Mixing Strategies

There are several feed mixing strategies and feed processing options available to small-scale swine producers.

The first option is to purchase a complete feed supplied by a commercial mill.  This is often the most expensive option, but the quality control is generally good.

Feed grains must be processed before feeding to pigs to achieve maximum utilization of the ingredients.  In the case of corn, pigs will chew the grain, but not sufficiently to allow for optimal digestion.

There are several options for purchasing and mixing pig feed. Feed may be either fed in a ground form, ideally less than 700 microns, or in a pelleted form.
