Crops and Soils

A one-day field clinic designed to improve the agronomic management skills of industry personnel, extension and public agents, crop consultants, and producers.

A one-day event that provides continuing education for both commercial and private applicators.

Penn State Crop Management Team will provide a training session that is designed for entry level scouts (i.e., non-CCAs with limited or no crop scouting experience, or as a refresher) who will be working for crop consultants, industry agronomists, or ag service providers throughout Pennsylvania or neighboring states.

Customized programs are developed to meet local crop production needs, which vary by location. Speakers include University crop and pest management specialists. Offered January through March.

The adoption of cover crops-crops planted after harvest of grain or silage crops to reduce soil erosion-has been gaining in practice by grain crop producers.

Clinics held each summer at Penn State's Research Farm in Rock Springs, a few miles from the University Park campus, provides attendees with information on pest identification, prediction and management of diseases and insects; nutrient and soil management; and integrated crop management practices.

These one-day seminars offer opportunities for participants to earn pesticide, nutrient management and certified crop adviser credits; to learn about key current crop management issues; and to gather the latest industry information from extension experts and commercial exhibitors.

Join Penn State Extension educators at locations throughout Pennsylvania to recap last year's crop production and discuss new innovations for the coming season.

Agricultural marketing needs are diverse and complex and include decisions ranging from moving into direct-to-consumer sales, to social media strategies, to understanding commodity markets.

These workshops address the challenges in producing high-quality hay.

This workshop focuses on variety selection and production practices for small grain species of alternative flour-producing crops such as hard wheat, spelt, emmer and barley.

Tours of Penn State research plots and participation in-field seminars teach innovative agronomic and plant protection practices and promote adoption of these to increase economic, environmental and social sustainability.

These programs include a range of crop-specific workshops. Classroom programs are held November through March, with hands-on, in-field programs April through October.

Manure nutrients from livestock and poultry can provide a valuable nutrient substitution for fertilizers but can create environmental challenges when over-applied.

Penn State Extension is teaming up with local organic crop growers to offer educational opportunities for farmers interested in organic and/or biological farming.

Good pasture management involves much more than turning livestock out to forage. This generates opportunities to improve farm profitability and reduce environmental degradation.

These are traditional two-core and two-category credit sessions for private pesticide applicators, but any applicators may attend. Offered at multiple sites statewide.

These in-depth seminars focus on proper soil fertility management for profitable crop yields and economics as well as environmental protection.
