Land Use & Local Decision-making
Balancing the need to preserve farmland with the need for future housing development is part of land use planning.
More than 10,000 Pennsylvanians serve on 1,700 municipal and county planning commissions. Another 6,000-7,000 serve on hearing boards and are involved in the day-to-day administration of some 1,600 municipal zoning ordinances. The programs below can help provide skills and knowledge needed to make effective decisions for communities.
Land owners, farmers, elected and appointed officials, developers and community members need information before making decisions about natural resource utilization or preservation.
The course covers community planning, subdivision, land development, and zoning and zoning administration.
Students understand how communities are planned.
Organizations and communities sometimes find it necessary to make a strategic plan to help guide them in reaching goals.
