Workshop Series for Beginning Farmers

During this three-hour session, class participants will learn about the fundamentals of fuel supply and handling, available technologies for utilizing low, medium, and high grade Biogas streams, and the environmental benefits of processing otherwise unutilized or underutilized waste streams.
This workshop will help participants to interpret and understand the results of water testing that has been done by a lab, whether for pre-gas well drilling or from routine testing of private water supplies.
Partnerships need to happen with more than parents. And what we see, and hear, is not always what we think it is. That is true with parents, families, and/or guardians of the children in our care. (K3 C1 31)

Session #3 - Using Native Plants in the Garden
Join Greg Hoover, Penn State’s Ornamental Entomology Extension Specialist, and Gary Moorman, Penn State’s Plant Pathology Extension Specialist, for an informative session on woody ornamental insect and disease problems in the landscape. This is a hands-on, interactive session as we walk the grounds of Sherwood Oaks. Pesticide Credits and Continuing Education Units will be awarded.

Session #4 - Growing, Preserving, and Using Herbs
Creator of the gardens at Brandywine Cottage, David Culp is an expert on garden layering and perennials. No where is his expertise more apparent than the majestic display of plants at his Brandywine Cottage, a garden listed in the Smithsonian Institution Archives of American Gardens and regularly highlighted by Martha Stewart Living and HGTV.
This is a hands-on, interactive session using live plant samples. Participants will be asked to go through the samples on their own, naming the plant and what is wrong with it. Then, we will go over the samples together, emphasizing integrated pest management strategies for control. Pesticide Credits and Continuing Education Units will be awarded.
The Mercer County Master Gardeners are sponsoring a bus trip on Monday, July 22 to Wednesday, July 24, 2013. The bus will leave the Mercer County Extension office at 6:00 a.m. promptly. We will be returning on Wednesday, July 24 at 8:30 p.m. (time tentative).

Renewable Energy Academy - 3 hour workshop on Small Scale Hydro Applications for Farms, and Business
Home canning can provide quality, nutritious food for your family, and be a satisfying and rewarding experience. However, improperly canned foods can be a source of frustration, wasted food, money and time; serious illness and even death.
Success in the landscape begins with a comprehensive knowledge of plant material available in the trade and matching site conditions with appropriate woody plants. Green industry professionals cannot give accurate estimates if they are unable to identify the plants in a landscape because they will not be aware of the maintenance requirements. In this six-week, hands-on class, Sandy Feather and Nancy Knauss, Penn State Extension Horticulture Educators, will teach participants to identify shade and flowering trees by their unique characteristics, while gaining an understanding of their growing requirements, as well as their common insect and disease problems. Continuing Education Units and Recertification Credits will be awarded. Dates - July 25, August 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29, 2013.
The Strengthening Families Program: for Parents and Youth 10-14 is a family skills-building curriculum designed to prevent teen substance abuse and other behavior problems; strengthen parenting skills; build family strengths.
Campers will go on an excavation while they learn all about dinosaurs and archeology. Uncover bones and put together the pieces to solve the long lost mysteries of the prehistoric era!
