Competition Teaches Ag Safety and Health

Posted: August 29, 2016

Youth from 4-H and FFA learned about farm safety strategies through their participation in the Farm Safety and Health 2016 Quiz Bowl competition at Ag Progress Days.

Three 4-H and eight FFA teams from throughout the state displayed their knowledge during the semi-final round of competition on Wednesday, August 17, 2016 at Ag Progress Days.

The teams competed in a quiz show format which tested their knowledge about farm safety and health hazards and recommended practices. Teams and coaches have access to a range of resources such as the National Safe Tractor & Machinery Operation Program Task Sheets and Penn State Farm Safety Factsheets to prepare for the competition. Not only do the team members learn about farm safety and health, but they also increase their leadership and public speaking skills. One of the intended outcomes is that they will learn to promote agricultural safety and health through their organizations and potentially in their own farm operations.

For 4-H, all three teams will compete during the 4-H Farm Safety & Health Quiz Bowl Finals at the Pennsylvania Farm Show in Harrisburg on Wednesday, January 11, 2017. Each team received a certificate and a monetary prize. The following 4-H teams will advance to the State Finals at the 2017 PA Farm Show: Cumberland County 4-H and Union County 4-H Teams A and B.
