Youth Competition Teaches Farm Safety
Posted: August 26, 2015
The next generation of agricultural producers learned about farm safety strategies through the Farm Safety and Health Quiz Bowl completion. Eight FFA and four 4-H teams from throughout the state displayed their knowledge during the semi-final round of competition on Wednesday, August 19, 2015 at Ag Progress Days.
The teams competed in a quiz show format and tested on their knowledge about farm safety and health hazards and recommended practices. Teams and coaches have access to a range of resources such as the National Safe Tractor & Machinery Operation Program Task Sheets and Penn State Farm Safety Factsheets to prepare for the competition. Not only do the team members learn about farm safety and health but they also increase their leadership and public speaking skills. One of the intended outcomes is that they will learn to promote agricultural safety and health through their organizations and in their own farm operations.
The top four scoring teams from both FFA and 4-H will compete during the Pennsylvania Farm Safety & Health Quiz Bowl Finals at the 2016 Pennsylvania Farm Show. Each team member received a first aid kit provided by the Pennsylvania Worker Protection Standard Program and the chapter received a certificate and a monetary prize.
The Pennsylvania Ag Safety and Health Quiz Bowl is administered by the Penn State Extension’s Agricultural Safety and Health Program. Current financial supporters include:
