Welcome to FARM-HAT Mobile Application Guide

What is the purpose of the application?

Welcome to FARM-HAT – The Farm/Agriculture/Rural Management – Hazard Analysis Tool is a simple method of providing first-hand information about hazards, a process for evaluating hazards, and recommendations on correcting hazards. FARM-HAT is based on a PDF manual that provides details on each hazard element and how to fix possible problems.

How is the material organized?

There are three different headings used in the FARM HAT app. When doing an assessment, there are three basic steps: 1) Choose a Category topic from the main list of categories, 2) Choose an Item to Assess (e.g., milkhouse) that you have added, and 3) Choose the Hazard Element (e.g., electrical wiring, etc.) that you want to assess. The Hazard Element is scored on a scale of 1 (lowest hazard level) to 5 (highest hazard level) with a description of each hazard level so that users can easily identify the appropriate level.

Assessment Process

To complete an assessment on an item (e.g., barn, shop, tractor, hay baler, fence, etc.), follow the steps below:

  • Step 1: Download Forms and Manuals

Do this first! From the Home page, click on ‘Download Forms & Manuals’. The ‘Download Forms & Manuals’ page opens to a list of 12 categories. Click on one Category at a time to open and view the Hazard Elements. Check the Hazard Elements applicable to your operation. Use the ‘Back’ button to move between Categories and Hazard Elements. Once your Categories and Hazard Elements are checked, click ‘Done’ at the top middle of the page to return to the ‘Download Forms & Manuals’ page. Hit the ‘Download Selected’ button to download the selected Hazard Elements. When the downloading is completed tap the ‘OK’ button.

  • Step 2: Adding Items to Assess

This step must be done BEFORE conducting an assessment. Click on the ‘Items to Assess’ tab on the homepage or the ‘Items’ tab at the bottom of the screen to open the ‘Items to Assess’ screen. Click on the ‘Select Category’ divot which opens up to the list of categories that you have downloaded. Scroll through the categories until you locate the appropriate category for the item you want to assess. Once it is highlighted, click ‘Done’.
Click on the ‘Show/Add Item to Assess’ button. If you already entered an item (e.g., tractor, dairy barn, shop, etc.) it will appear in list form on the screen. If you need to add an item to assess, click on the words ‘Add Item’ at the top right hand corner of the screen which will open a screen where you type in the item name (e.g., main shop, JD 4020, etc.) and provide a short description in the ‘Details’ box if needed (e.g., JD 4020 located at rental farm). After you have entered the item to assess and details, click on ‘Save Item’ located under the ‘Details’ box. Continue to use the ‘Add Item’ button to add additional items to assess. Repeat with the other categories and items for your farm or ranch.

  • Step 3: Perform Assessment

To complete an assessment, click on the ‘Assessments’ tab at the bottom of the screen. Choose a category from the scroll list, highlight the category, and click ‘Done’ in the top right corner of the box. Next select the item to assess by choosing the item from the scroll listing, highlight the item, and click done at the top right corner of the box. Then select a Hazard Element to assess from the scroll list. The Hazard Elements are based on the downloaded forms and manual pages that you chose to download in Step 2. Choose the Hazard Element from the scroll list, highlight the topic, and click done in the top right corner of the box.

Click on the ‘Do Assessment’ button in the middle of the screen to start the actual assessment. The assessment page will show the item you are assessing in the top middle portion of the screen. There will be a list of 5 hazard levels to choose from with the first option being lowest hazard level to option number five being the most severe or high hazard level. To choose a level, click on the circle (placing a check mark in the circle) that best describes your hazard level and click ‘Submit’. There are small images under the circles for options 1, 3, and 5 to help you visually determine the best match of your item to the options. Click on the image to enlarge the photo and click on the ‘X’ in a red circle in the top left corner to return to the list of options. 

After you click the ‘Submit’ button, it will take you back to the ‘Assessment’ screen with the same Category and Item to Assess. From this screen you choose additional Hazard Elements to assess by clicking on the Hazard Element and selecting the next one to assess. There will be check marks beside the Hazard Element(s) that you have completed. If you want to do an assessment for a different Category, click on the ‘New Category’ button on the Assessment screen. Repeat the process of choosing the item to assess based on the category and then choose the hazard element. 

Viewing Assessment Results

You can view results of the past year assessments grouped by the farm, category, or hazard elements of individual items, in table or graph form. The following are ways to view the results of the assessment:

  • Option 1: View Hazards Level and Corrective Action

Click on the ‘Assessment’ button at the bottom of the screen. Choose your category, item to assess, and hazard element. Click on the ‘Done – See Results’ button (middle button) to see the rank for that specific ag operation item and the corrective action. The banner at the top with your score will match the hazard level rank.

  • Option 2: Complete View Based on Entire Ag Operation, Category or Ag Op Item

After you have completed all of the assessments based on the categories, ag operation items, and hazard elements related to your operation, click on the ‘Results’ tab located at the bottom of the screen. Results can be viewed based on the entire ag operation, specific category, or specific ag operation item by clicking on the option. Choose to view your assessment result in either ‘Graph’ or ‘Tabular Data’ format.

Manual Pages

There is a manual page for each hazard element. To view the full manual page that provides additional information about each hazard element, click on the ‘Manual’ button at the bottom of the screen and follow these steps:

  1. Select the Category from the scroll list and click on ‘Done’.
  2. Select the Hazard Element from the scroll list and click on ‘Done’.
  3. Click on Show Manual
  4. When finished with the manual page, click ‘Done’ at the top left of the page.
