National Safety Tractor & Machinery Operation Program (NSTMOP)

The NSTMOP was originally developed and designed for 14- and 15-year-olds seeking employment in production agriculture. The U.S. Department of Labor’s Hazardous Occupations Order in Agriculture (AgHOs) regulation prohibits 14- and 15-year-olds from operating farm tractors and attached powered equipment unless the youth has successfully completed an approved safe tractor and machinery operation training program.

NSTMOP can also be used with youth on family farms, new and beginning farmers, and inexperienced adult operators.  The written test and driving evaluations that are required for the AgHO certification are not required when used with these groups. However it is encouraged and does add a level of sophistication to the training when used. Additionally, the NSTMOP task sheets can be downloaded by anyone and used as a reference on safe practices.
