Twenty farmers and agricultural employees gathered at a local dairy farm on November 8th to view a cover crop demonstration plot that was planted earlier this fall.  The cover crop species in the demonstration plot included rye, oats, triticale, and annual ryegrass; hairy vetch, crimson clover, and tillage radish were also planted.  During the field day, participants learned about the benefits of planting cover crops and reviewed strategies for successfully establishing cover crops in Western Pennsylvania.

After the field day, above-ground biomass samples were collected from all plots to determine species' growth and nutrient content.  The results of the study will be presented at another field day next spring.
