Penn State Stallion wins Breeders Award
Posted: January 4, 2012
A four-year-old stallion owned by Penn State captured both Pennsylvania Quarter Horse Association (PQHA) awards for 2011 at their annual banquet in December. The stallion, PSU Dynamic Krymsun (aka "Rocky"), was born and raised at the University and is by One Hot Krymsun and out of Dynamic Zippo. Rocky's first two foals are only yearlings; however, it was the success of these two yearlings and his four weanlings at the 2011 PQHA Fall Classic and Futurity which garnered the award for this young stallion.
The PA Breeders Award goes to the Pennsylvania-owned stallion whose get earn the most points in the futurity classes at the PQHA Fall Classic horse show. The Joyce Armstrong Memorial QIP Breeders Award is given to a stallion from anywhere in the United States whose get earn the most points in the futurity classes at the PQHA Fall Classic.
Dr. Terry Etherton, Head of the Department of Dairy and Animal Science, said, "It is a special honor for PSU Dynamic Krymsun to receive these two PQHA awards, and an affirmation of the hard work of our faculty and staff in equine science in improving the quality of our Quarter Horses. The program continues to develop and offers excellent learning opportunities for students." He noted that the University was recognized by the American Quarter Horse Association in October with its Legacy Award.
Penn State's Equine Science program includes a breeding herd of registered Quarter Horses. In all, the herd consists of four breeding stallions, 25 broodmares, and a variable number of young horses ranging from 1-3 years of age. Penn State's Quarter Horse herd provides high quality animals for undergraduate and graduate coursework, various extension programs, and some management-oriented research.
"Rocky's" foals exhibit good conformation, excellent quality of movement and a gentle, willing attitude. These attributes should allow them to be fantastic Western Pleasure and all around prospects. Offspring by PSU Dynamic Krymsun and other College-owned stallions are utilized in undergraduate coursework until they are two years of age, after which they are offered for sale as part of the Penn State Equine Science Showcase and Registered Quarter Horse Sale. This event is a student-run sale which affords students the opportunity to learn about marketing through the real life situation of planning, coordinating, and implementing the sale. The 2012 sale is scheduled for April 28 at the Snider Agricultural Arena.
In addition to PSU Dynamic Krymsun (One Hot Krymsun X Dynamic Zippo), Penn State also stands Willie Be Nimble (The Jac Be Nimble X Skips Brown Velvet), Suddenly Secret (The Top Secret X Misters Little Te), and Time To Score (Time To Touch X Precisely TH Coolest). All four stallions are available to breed outside mares.
