Nutrition Research Tools

Information about tools developed at Penn State to assist in nutritional research for dairy calves, heifers, and cows.

Penn State researchers devised a method of collecting urine from female dairy cattle that requires no adhesive and allows the animal to urinate without restriction. Using this method, urine can be completely isolated from feces and collected at floor-level behind the animal. The urine collection cup used in this system is available for purchase.

Penn State researchers have been using ruminally cannulated calves in nutrition experiments since 2003. This cannula is now available for purchase from Penn State.
