A monitoring tool (Excel spreadsheet) for protein and phosphorus levels in the ration and manure evaluating lactating and dry cows, and heifers.

This fact sheet is a supplement to the Excel spreadsheets on “Monitoring Protein and MUN for Milk Cows” and “Monitoring Protein for Dry Cows and Heifers”. The Excel spreadsheets have been developed to provide tools for monitoring progress related to nitrogen importation on the farm over time. Implementation of the feed management plan requires that changes are documented.

Urea nitrogen (N) levels in blood plasma, blood serum and milk of an individual cow are highly related. Therefore, MUN values are representative of urea levels of blood and other body fluids. Because MUN is a breakdown product of protein, it can be used to monitor protein status of cows.

Obtaining a good representative sample of forages and total mixed rations is important so the proper interpretations are made evaluating quality and precision feeding.
