Number of Dairy Cows
USDA data on the number of dairy cows from 2008 to present. As with milk production, when the herd size grows rapidly, prices usually fall, also rapidly. The herd expansion in 2008 led to the price collapse of 2009. The market could not absorb the milk from all those cows.
