Housing Heifers from Weaning to Pre-Calving

A good heifer housing system promotes the well-being of animals at various ages, provides the caretaker safe and efficient working conditions, protects the environment, and is cost effective to build and maintain. Design and management features of naturally ventilated bedded pack, freestall, and self-cleaning housing options used for heifers are highlighted. Guidelines for sizing and siting are also discussed.

Program presented by Dan McFarland and John Tyson, Penn State Agricultural Engineers with the Penn State Extension Dairy Team.
